Tonight I was making popcorn on the stove and the smell reminded me of my childhood at my Grandparents house. It's funny how smells can take you back to a place in your past in a split second. If I close my eyes I can see it; Grandma in front of her stove and the red pan that she used to cook the popcorn in. And the smell, oh the smell.
My brother and I were blessed as children to be so close to my Grandparents. They were incredible people. We were with them a lot, and I loved staying all night. Grandma would make supper and after supper Grandpa and I would do the dishes. This was usually followed by several games of Old Maid, all of which he made sure to put the Old Maid just a little higher than the rest of the cards so that I could win.
As the evening would come to an end Grandma would give us a bath. She had the neatest bathroom and I loved her bathtub. She would fill the tub with bubbles and run a heater in the bathroom to keep us warm. She had this bench in her bathroom that I would sit on and talk to her while she got ready. She never seemed to tire of us, although as a mom now I'm sure I was exhausting.
And then after we had our pajamas on she would make popcorn for our bedtime snack. The smell filled the house and she would let us eat it on the "davenport" while we watched t.v.
She would tuck us in and then Grandpa would come in and tell the best bedtime stories you ever heard. What I wouldn't give to hear him tell me a bedtime story tonight. And we always prayed.
Even though they have been gone for many years, I still miss them and think of them all the time. But I know that because of the gift of the Cross, I will one day be reunited with them and enjoy them eternally. Thank you Father for blessing me with an amazing Grandma & Grandpa
